Life Beyond High School

I graduated earlier this May, and I absolutely love being out of school.  Who wouldn't love having no more homework? I'm taking at least a year off before college to work full-time on my music career, and I've never had so much free time on my hands. But all of that said, there's also an element of trust that goes into it all. It's funny how when we're stuck in a routine, everything seems so simple. We think we know all of life's hardest questions, but what do we know, really? All I know is that I'm learning to trust God in a completely new way.

So with beginning a new era of life (that makes me feel incredibly old saying that), I decided I should also step out of my box and serve God in new ways as well. I recently started helping out with my church's youth group. Ever since attending my first Momentum Youth Conference four years ago, God has given me such a heart for this age group. It's an influential time in a person's life; they’re so moldable and yearning for the truth. I never thought I'd be serving in this way, but God has slowly been tugging on my heart about it for a while now, even though I tried to ignore it. So when the opportunity arose, I jumped at it. I'm curious to see where all of this will lead, so I'm trusting that God knows what he's doing.

If I'm being honest, it's scary not knowing what the future holds. It's like reading the most amazing novel ever and then not being able to skip to the ending for a quick sneak peek. Chapter by chapter, people come and go from our lives. Some make a difference in ways that they'll never know. We’ll try things we never thought we would do. There will be plot twists at every turn. We don't know how our stories will end, but they were written long ago, before even time itself began. God can use us in ways we never imagined, but we need to have a willingness to serve and to trust him when everything else seems uncertain.

My prayer is that whether through my music, youth group or another ministry, one person would come to know Jesus and walk closely with him. If I reach one person, then it will ALL be worth it.

I don't know what my future holds, but I’m sure of who holds it! So all my greatest dreams, plans, and hopes... I place them in your hands, God - the author of my story.

What I Learned at Momentum 2014

My youth group recently attended Momentum National Youth Conference. This year’s theme was based on Kyle Idleman’s book Not a Fan. Each speaker challenged us to not just be a fan of Jesus, but to follow him with everything we are. It’s such a simple concept, yet each and every one of us seems to struggle with it.

Some things I learned from the week:
- I need to define my relationship with Christ. Do I exclusively belong to Jesus?
- Have I been raised in the Church or in Christ?
- What did I have to say no to, to say yes to Jesus?
- “Good behavior” should not be my goal, but the result of loving God more deeply.
- You can’t clean a fish before you catch it.
- “I need to be willing to do crazy, stupid stuff to share Jesus with people.” – Greg Stier
- “When you stand before the God of the universe, what good is your personal resume going to be?” – Trip Lee
- A lot of people have the right destination [Heaven] in their GPS, but don’t follow the instructions to get there. The Bible is our roadmap and following Jesus is the only way to Heaven.
- God’s absolutes are absolutely good.
- I can trust the Word of God because the Word of God died for me.
- I can follow the Truth, because I know who gave it.
- “Before you jump over a fence, ask why it was put there.” – Keith Minier
- “Maybe you have a hard time listening to God’s Word because you don’t know God.” – Keith Minier
- Take up your cross daily. It’s a continuous struggle.
- “A Christian out of God’s will is like a fish out of water. He’s going to struggle until you put him back in the water.” – Afshin Ziafat
- The remedy for loneliness is to serve.
- “It is better, if it is God’s will, to suffer for doing good than for doing evil.” (1 Peter 3:17)

It’s easy to just let the week be a spiritual high and return to our everyday lives, but it’s more than a spiritual high. It’s the difference between being a fan of Jesus and a follower of Jesus. Momentum doesn’t end when you get home. Continue to live on mission.

Luke 9:23
“Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me.”

One-Year Anniversary!!!

Today is the one-year anniversary of Dance in the Rain!!! Can you guess what happened today? That's right... it rained! I'm telling you - God has a sense of humor. Honestly, I feel blessed beyond belief. To God be ALL the glory.

So tonight I'm watching The Sound of Music on NBC. Can't help thinking back to when I met Elisabeth von Trapp at her concert! She definitely inherited some incredible vocals from her family.
